Synopsis

Based on a true story, and set in Germany in 1927, Harry Frommermann (Ulrich Noethen) is a young, Jewish musician who, inspired by the close harmony of the black American jazz group, the Revellers, sets about forming his own group.

After teaming up with the confident and ambitious singer Robert (Ben Becker), the group falls into place, recruiting three more singers and a pianist.

It's not long until the Comedian Harmonists rise to fame, but at the same time, Nazism is growing in Germany. Although three members of the group are Jewish, like many of their countrymen, the sextet are in denial of the actual intentions of the Nazis.

As they become more popular and the Nazi threat increases, they delude themselves into believing their fame will protect them.

They are wrong and the group is banned from performing in public.

An enjoyable, musical biopic, The Comedian Harmonists is also a touching and tear-jerking film about a group of successful musicians who are crushed by the politics of the Nazi regime.
