Synopsis

“Nimble juggling of a serious subject, unexpected comic twists and an eminently likable cast”
Ronnie Scheib - VARIETY

Writer and director Bui Thac Chuyen revisits the subject matter of his 2001 documentary to create a black comedy about the true story of a Vietnamese landmine clearer. Living In Fear combines human drama and high tension as each step among the landmines holds the potential for an explosion.

Tai (Huu Phuc Tran), a South Vietnamese soldier returns from the war to rural Vietnam and lives in fear of retribution from the Northern alliance. His fear is made worse by his chosen occupation of clearing unexploded landmines for sale on the black-market. His family life, already complicated with two pregnant wives in separate villages, becomes more so. His disapproving brother-in-law, who happens to be a Communist Official, involves himself in the moral judgement of Tai’s bigamy and his involvement with the Pro-American South Vietnamese army.

Tension packed and light on dialogue, Living In Fear is a poignant story of struggle and responsibility. A serious comment on the issue of unexploded landmines that litter the Vietnamese countryside to this day.
