Synopsis
‘Anyone who ever binged and saw three or more movies in a row should be able to identify a little bit with the eccentric New Yorkers profiled in Angela Christlieb and Stephen Kijak's crisp, intelligent documentary film Cinemania’.
-Stephen Holden, New York Times
A captivating documentary about five eccentric New Yorkers whose love for cinema borders on the obsessive compulsive. Jack, Eric, Harvey, Roberta, and Bill; the Silver Screen's biggest fans become the true stars in Cinemania. Seeing anywhere between two to five movies a day, real life just doesn't measure up for these Cinemaniacs who choose instead to live in the heightened reality of the world cinema.
French pop songs, all about cinephilia, create an entertaining atmosphere whilst interviews with the film fanatics are conducted in darkened hallways of theatres and in various locations around midtown Manhattan. The intensity of movie mania is analyzed in excruciating and comical detail and it is evident that these eccentric movie goers are happy in their isolated world and wish not to be judged or pitied for their obsession.
One of the real treats that Cinemania offers is the retrospective of clips from classic, contemporary and arthouse film. Not to mention the enchanting journey through classic venues such as The Walter Reade Theater, The Film Forum, Anthology Film Archives and the like.
