Synopsis

“Among the recent spate of intensely French takes on "The Great War," the abstract therapeutic angle of “Fragments” lends a dreamlike quality somehow outside of specific time and allegiance.”
- Ronnie Schieb, VARIETY

An emotive story of the mental rehabilitation of a traumatized and partly catatonic returned WWI soldier, Antonin. Through the care and resourcefulness of military psychiatrist Dr Labrousse, Antonin begins to assimilate and break out of this shell-shocked, non-communicative state in this intriguing war drama, Fragments Of Antonin. Graphic flashback sequences reveal Antonin’s condition stemmed from the horrors he witnessed as his countrymen turned on each other in the trenches, a horrific reality of war that is often swept under the carpet.

Fragments Of Antonin is structured in a surreal format as the film flips back in time to reveal black and white snippets of footage as the memories of Antonin begin to reform. The interior theme of the film is summed up with this quote from dishevelled Antonin, “How long does it take to make a man and how long does it take to destroy him”. A strong and engaging first feature from Gabriel Le Bomin that offers an original perspective on the war stories of old, worthy of it’s nomination for the 2007 César Award for Best First Work. Similarly, a sturdy performance from newcomer Grégori Derangère as Antonin.
