Synopsis
“A well-oiled script served by a multigenerational cast that is bittersweet and consistently entertaining”
-Lisa Nesselson, VARIETY
A fresh and charming dramatic comedy hosted by a dazzling French cast that explores the themes of life and art through the intersecting lives of three elaborate characters.
Orchestra Seats made an impact at the 2007 French César Awards and observes the flair and eccentricities of Bohemian Paris through the eyes of Jessica, an inquisitive provincial girl who touches the lives of her new cohorts. Helmed by gifted director Danièle Thompson and co-written by her up-and-coming son, Christopher Thompson, this layered screenplay illustrates that talent can be both a curse and a blessing in the elusive quest for happiness.
Jessica is a naive country girl who dreams of the big city and the luxury it exudes. She talks her way into a job waiting tables at the Café des Theatres, an old fashioned venue that is home to an atmospheric art gallery and theatre on the illustrious Avenue Montaigne in Paris. It is here she mixes with a blend of first-rate artistes whose lives, in comparison to hers, are enchanting and enviable. Catherine, a well-known French celebrity, longs to be regarded as a ‘serious’ actress and is also attempting to woo big-time American director Brian Sobinski, a delightful cameo role played by Sydney Pollack. All the while Jacques, a wealthy self-made mogul, is remorsefully selling off his entire 20th century art collection he has spent his lifetime amassing and concert pianist Jean-François longs to leave the stuffy concert circuit but his dynamic wife has him booked six years straight.
Orchestra Seats tracks the coinciding momentous events of these three unique individuals with both humour and compassion.
