Synopsis

"The results are like the pleasures of watching a gently flowing stream”
-Jay Weissberg, VARIETY

The WORLD MOVIES Channel Radar has been switched on and is sweeping the world’s film vaults for
hidden cinematic gems, underground cuts and innovative eye candy.

The Radar: Located. Chosen. Screened.
After waiting 15 years for approval from the Grand Prior of the Carthusian Order to film within the monastery than no ‘outsider’ had ever before been allowed to enter, director Philip Gröning’s Into Great Silence is a purely immersive look at the lives of the devoted brotherhood of the Grand Chartreuse monastery in the French Alps.

With no commentary, music or artificial lighting, Philip Gröning portrays the serenity of the rhythms, rituals and repetition that define the day to day lives of the monks of the Carthusian order, presenting their silence as a physical destination with meaning and value separate from the chaotic world in which most of us live.

As writer, director and producer Gröning lived alongside the monks for six months in order to document their unique and peaceful lifestyle, the transcendent results has been referred to as a glimpse at eternity and a film to be truly experienced. Into Great Silence won the Special Jury Prize World Cinema – Documentary at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize World Cinema – Documentary.
