One Hundred Nails

Synopsis
“The charming, largely non-professional cast and lovely shooting location further the case for the necessity and pleasure of escaping the library (or the film set) and getting out into the world.”
-Steve Mockus - Italian Cultural Institute, San Francisco
In an opening scene reminiscent of The Da Vinci Code, a library caretaker shrieks in horror when he discovers 100 precious manuscripts nailed to the floor with giant nails, akin to those used to pin Jesus to the cross. Palme d’Or winning director (The Tree of Wooden Clogs) Ermanno Olmi declared One Hundred Nails his final fiction film, and as in much of his previous work, his finale uses religion as a key theme. The film won the Critics Award and was nominated for six others at the David di Donatello Awards in 2007.
Raz Degan plays an Italian professor of philosophy, who has dedicated his life to literature and sharing his great wealth of knowledge with his students. On a journey of discovery, he leaves his job in Bologna and seeks refuge in the ruins of a peasant house on the outskirts of a quiet rural township. Stunning scenery, including breathtaking images along the banks of the Po River, accompany a strong message about the importance of human relationships over literature and morals over religion.
