Synopsis
“A fine, moving and illuminating account of a writer who used the bleak, harrowing circumstances of his life to forge a unique style that addressed concerns and characters often absent from the literature of his time.
-John Dover, POP MATTERS
A compelling crash course in the life and work of seminal American writer, Hubert Selby Jr, this documentary gives an impressive cross-section of talking heads in a sharply edited forum in which to celebrate a talent whose prose and persona continue to reverberate worldwide a year after his death.
A survivor in every sense of the word, Selby’s best known books, ‘Last Exit To Brooklyn’ and ‘Requiem For A Dream’, inspired faithful and worthwhile films, drawing on his own painful battles with drug addiction to become one of the most celebrated and controversial authors of the 20th century. Taking both a thematic and loosely chronological approach to his life and work and culminating with scenes shot at a remembrance service for his death in 2004, the film is unexpectedly moving and tender for a man whose work dealt so unflinchingly with violence, addiction, poverty, and depravity.
Narrated by fellow reformed drug addict Robert Downey Jr. and featuring interviews with Selby along with friends Lou Reed, Uli Edel, Aronofsky and even Henry Rollins, this touching yet penetrating documentary exposes the real Selby - an extremely dedicated, humble and humane individual whose body of work represents a genuine triumph over severe illness, addiction, and adversity.
