Synopsis
“Excellent period kung fu effort”
-John Charles, HONG KONG DIGITAL
This cult classic of the kung fu genre is an early directorial work of on-screen veteran Lieh Lo, and is a follow up of legendary martial arts director Lau Kar-leung’s Executioners From Shaolin.
With plans to rebuild the destroyed Shaolin temple, the Shaolin students are hunted down by members of the White Lotus Clan, on orders from their master Priest White Lotus. Many are killed, but among the survivors is Hong Wen-Ting, a determined young student who vows to avenge the deaths of his brothers in a challenge with Priest White Lotus. He challenges the master with his Tiger Crane style of kung fu but the highly skilled White Lotus defeats him with ease. Wen-Ting retreats to study a softer form of kung fu, the somewhat effeminate Crane Beak style. This style proves more effective, but again the master is too good. It will take a revolutionary style of fighting inspired by ancient medicine to defeat Priest White Lotus.
In Clan Of The White Lotus, director Lo Lieh plays Priest White Lotus also inspired by legendary Kung Fu Master Pai Mei. Lieh's co-star, the revered Gordon Liu, has also portrayed the Pai Mei character, notably in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 2. In this film, Gordon Liu plays the young protagonist Hong Wen-Ting.
