French auteur Albert Lamorisse will be immortalised for his two short features that represent the pinnacle of his achievements, White Mane and The Red Balloon, respectively winning him a Palme D’or, Grand Prix and Oscar® awards in 1953 and 1956. Celebrating the experience of childhood and capturing the wonder and joys of the world seen through innocent eyes, Lamorisse’s life-impressing short films remain ageless classics that find a place in the heart of every new generation since their release over half a century ago.
Predecessor to The Red Balloon, Albert Lamorisse won the Palme D’or at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival for this ageless tale of a young boy who becomes emotionally involved with the welfare of a wild, white horse. Lamorisse’s son also starred in this grimmer and more mysterious, film which follows the story of a wild white horse pursued by a group of unsuccessful ranchers. Witnessing the ranchers failed attempts to calm White Mane, young Folco tries to tame the horse himself. To the humiliated ranchers’ disbelief, White Mane quickly accepts Folco’s genuine and caring nature. The ranchers take up the chase again, unaware of a looming tragedy. Such an ending stems from Lamorisse’s experience of living through the Nazi occupation of France, his intentions to create the film for the children who survived the war and were continuing to deal with its aftermath.
