Synopsis
“A fresh and diverting vampire movie, this is one for those who have tasted superior blood ...”
–Andrew Urban URBAN CINEFILE
Brilliantly conceived and hypnotically told, this adaptation of the touching Swedish novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist chronicles the blossoming friendship between a young loner and his new neighbour, the mysterious Eli.
Pale, submissive Oskar lives with his divorced, distracted mother on the outskirts of Stockholm and endures harrowing days being picked on by merciless bullies. When his odd new neighbours arrive at night, they immediately place cardboard over the bedroom window of their pale young girl Eli. Soon enough, the neighbourhood is startled by a series of grisly murders involving the draining of victim’s blood. As these events unfold, Oskar begins to develop a hesitant friendship with Eli and realises that she, like him, is a lost child. The pair form a bond as she encourages him to stand up to the boys that are bullying him.
Shot in the misty twilights of Northern Sweden, Let The Right One In was a much-discussed hit on the international film festival circuit and breathes life into the oversaturated subset of the horror genre, the vampire film. Described by The Sydney Morning Herald’s Eddie Cockrell as ‘superb… [an] extraordinarily resonant work’, it was voted movie of the year by ‘Empire’ magazine, the first time a foreign language film topped their list since City of God in 2003 and acclaimed by Roger Ebert as ‘the best modern vampire movie’.
