Jonathan Holland VARIETY
Mexico’s submission for Best Foreign Language picture at the 2009 Academy Awards®, Tear This Heart Out follows the plight of a long-suffering wife of a Mexican general who begins a passionate affair with a young orchestra conductor.
Set in 1930s Mexico, a young village girl called Catalina marries Andres Ascencio, a much older and powerful general. As Andres climbs the political ladder, Catalina remains the leading lady by his side but quickly comes to realise that wealth and status doesn’t give her the freedom she longed for. Having children for her husband, as well as inheriting children from his previous marriage, Catalina also turns a blind eye to his other love affairs.
When Catalina meets Carlos, a young orchestra conductor, she is instantly attracted to his good looks, intellect, morals and left wing ideals. They have clandestine meetings and dream of running away together. Andres senses a threat from Carlos from his opposing ideas and also from Catalina who is becoming increasingly resistant to him. Stars Ana Claudia Talancón and Daniel Giménez Cacho.
