Synopsis

“Astonishingly original. It brings together four entirely separate elements and combines them into a great whimsical chord.”
-ROGER EBERT

In rough hand drawn animation filmmaker Nina Paley shares the details of her marriage breakdown after her husband moved from the US to India for business. Paley utilises an original re-telling of The Ramayana of Valmiki, the greatest break up story ever told starring Hindu gods Sita and Rama through digital and collage animation to highlight the uncanny parallels between Nina and Sita’s painful betrayals. The tales of heartbreak are punctuated by the exuberant drawings of a ‘Betty Boop’-esque blues singer whose musical numbers covers recordings of 1920s singer Annette Hanshaw including ‘Mean To Me’ and ‘What Wouldn’t I Do For That Man’.

Described by film critic Roger Ebert as ‘one of 2009’s best films’, Paley’s use of three very different animation styles for her awe-inspiring tale of heartbreak is enchanting and charming.
