Departures
Rating (M)
Synopsis
Enjoying tremendous acclaim which culminated in winning the Oscar® for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009, Departures delves into the Japanese perceptions of death when a depressed man inadvertently discovers himself through practicing the ancient art of corpse beatification.
Shall We Dansu?’s Masahiro Motoki plays Daigo, a devoted cellist in a recently disbanded symphony orchestra who moves his family back to his hometown. There, he unwittingly takes on the job of an undertaker. Initially disgusted by his pungent clients and the stigma of working with the unclean dead, he finds himself moved by the stories of the deceased and by the gratitude of the grieving relatives.
Departures trumped The Baader Meinhof Complex, The Class, Revanche and Waltz With Bashir for the Best Foreign Language Oscar® in 2009.
