Synopsis

A battalion of Czech soldiers endure the horrors of war in the harsh and desolate landscape of the Libyan Desert during the siege of Tobruk in this beautifully shot production from filmmaker Václav Marhoul.

When 20 year old Jiri sounds up as a volunteer in the Czechoslovak army, his naïve ideas about heroism are rawly confronted with the hell of the African desert, complicated relationships in his unit and the ubiquitous threat of death. All this takes its cruel toll in the shape of his gradual loss of self respect and courage.

Drawing inspiration from Stephen Crane’s 1895 revolutionary war novel ‘The Red Badge Of Courage’ Marhoul’s superior Czech production won a plethora of awards at the 2009 Czech Lion Awards, including Best Cinematography.
