Synopsis

“Kinatay impresses.”
- Jay Weissberg VARIETY

A long night’s journey into the Philippine underworld of corruption and cruelty is seen through the eyes of a police cadet in this harrowing mortality tale that won Brillante Mendoza Best Director at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d’Or.

Although he doesn’t expect it to be legal, a young man who needs money for his wedding agrees to go on a mysterious job. He is shocked to be teamed up with high ranking police and complicit to the rape, murder and dismemberment of a Manila prostitute. From the time the prostitute is captured, Kinatay shifts from a verite observation of contemporary life in the big city of Manila to a slow, noir-ish and real time descent of the soul.

Kinatay is a harrowing mortality tale that demonstrates what it is like to live in a corrupted society where life is cheap and people will do anything to make ends meet.
