Synopsis

“Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo is a movie in the great tradition of grandiose cinematic visions.”
- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN TIMES

At age 14, Werner Herzog was inspired by an encyclopaedia entry about film-making which he says provided him with everything he needed to get himself started as a filmmaker – that, and the 35 mm camera that the young Herzog stole from the Munich Film School.

Herzog has since become a renowned filmmaker known for never using storyboards and often improvising large parts of the script. Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo is a movie in the great tradition of grandiose cinematic visions; a quest film in which the hero’s expedition is scarcely madder than the filmmaker’s. The movie uses no special effects, models, opticals, or miniatures, instead encompasses the great poetic images of the sort Herzog is famous for.
